“From Kakadu (1983).  This work is in four sections:  Grave;  Comodo;  Misterioso;  Cantando.  The first and third sections are based upon the main theme of my orchestral piece Kakadu (1988) melody;  and the fourth section grows from it into a long,  singing line.  The work is an intimate one,  being concerned with the deep contentment that I feel whenever I return to Australia’s outback.  This feeling is ever-present in the dance-like second section,  and in the singing line,  and its counterpoint,  of the final Cantando section.  Commissioned by the Shell Darwin International Guitar Festival,  with assistance from the Performing Arts Board of Australia Council,  “From Kakadu” is dedicated to John Williams.”  Peter Sculthorpe.

“Into the Dreaming for solo cello (1993).  This short work was written upon a request from Belinda Webster of Tall Poppies Records.  It was part of her Uluru recording project,  a gathering together of ‘cello pieces by ten Australian composers.  In the International Year of Indigenous Peoples,  the project marked the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the returning of Uluru,  or Ayers Rock,  to its aboriginal owners.  The basic material of Into the Dreaming was inspired by a quiet,  solitary walk in the Valley of the Winds at Katajuta,  in the Uluru National Park.  I began writing the music on the day of the tragic death of a very dear friend,  Lillian Peart. T he music,  then,  sings for her.”  Peter Sculthorpe.
